01Our promise
In plain wordsYou are the customer, never the product. Our only business is the subscription you pay for and the keepsakes you order.
This Privacy Notice covers the Maternal Rose mobile apps, the web app, and this website (the “Service”), operated by Maternal Rose, LLC. It explains our practices plainly, and the promises in it are ones we have built the business around: no ads inside the app, no sale of personal information, no public feed. Because pregnancy, birth, and loss are health information, we also maintain a separate Consumer Health Data Privacy Notice with additional detail and rights.
02What we collect
Information you give us
- Account details:your name, email address, and phone number if you sign in by text message. If you use a passkey, we store only its public key; Face ID and fingerprints never leave your device. If you sign in with Google or Apple, they share your name and email with us.
- Your content: memories, birth stories and the guided conversations that shape them, standalone stories, photos, voice recordings you choose to make (turned into text), notes of love, perspectives, and questions you ask about your circle.
- Your children’s details, provided by you: names, due dates and birth dates, and the milestones you record (see Section 3).
- Settings: how much scripture you want in your prompts, your prompt rhythm, timezone, and notification preferences.
- Messages you send us, like support emails and waitlist signups.
Payment information
Payments are processed by Stripe (or by Apple or Google if you subscribe through their stores). Your card number goes to them, never to our servers; we keep only your subscription status and transaction records.
Information collected automatically
- Device and log data: device type, operating system, app version, IP address, and records of requests to our servers, used for security and troubleshooting.
- Product analytics: we use PostHog to understand which features are used, so we can improve them. We do not use advertising analytics inside the app.
- Push tokens, so your prompts and circle updates can reach your device.
03Your children's information
In plain wordsYou are writing about your child, not signing your child up. You provide their story, and you control every word of it.
Maternal Rose is a service for adults. Children do not create accounts and we do not knowingly collect information from children. The information about your children in Maternal Rose, their names, birth dates, photos, and the stories of their lives, is provided by you, their parent or guardian, and remains under your control.
- Your child’s information is used solely to provide the Service to you: to personalize prompts to their age, to build their story, and to show it to the loved ones you invite.
- It is never used for advertising or profiling, and never sold. It is your child.
- You can edit or delete a child’s profile and any entry about them at any time, and deleting your account deletes all of it (Section 11).
- You choose how much to share: some mothers use first names and every photo, others keep initials and few images. Both are fully supported.
- If we learn a child under 13 has used the Service directly, we will delete what they provided. Write to privacy@maternalrose.com if you believe this has happened.
04Health and loss-related information
In plain wordsThe most tender things you write here are treated with the most care, legally and humanly.
By its nature, Maternal Rose holds health information: pregnancy and due dates, birth stories and their details, postpartum reflections, and sometimes the story of a pregnancy or a child who was lost. You share this information by choosing to write it; we never require it, infer it, or obtain it from anyone else.
This information is used only to provide the Service you asked for: to time your prompts to your stage, to help you write, and to show your story to the people you invite. It is never sold, never shared for advertising, never used to train AI models, and never disclosed except as this notice describes. If you experience a loss, the Service offers a compassionate path: prompts pause or change, and what you choose to keep is held exactly as privately as everything else. Loss is never a commercial event to us, and no feature connected to loss will ever be sold to you.
Our Consumer Health Data Privacy Noticedescribes this category of information in the detail that Washington’s My Health My Data Act and similar laws require, including the specific rights those laws give you.
05Your faith settings
When you choose how much scripture and prayer you want in your prompts, that choice can reveal something about your beliefs, which privacy laws treat as sensitive information. We use your faith setting for exactly one thing: selecting the words of your prompts and devotional content. It is never shared, never sold, never used for any form of targeting, and changing it takes effect immediately.
06How we use information
We use the information described above to:
- provide the Service: store your story, deliver prompts, sync your devices;
- personalize prompts to your stage, your child’s age, and your faith setting;
- process the AI features you invoke (Section 7);
- send the notifications you have asked for, and service messages about your account;
- process payments and orders;
- answer your support requests;
- keep the Service secure and prevent abuse; and
- comply with legal obligations.
We send marketing email only with your consent, and every such email has a working unsubscribe link. We never use the content of your stories for marketing.
07AI processing
In plain wordsYour words go to an AI provider only when you use a writing feature, only as much as the feature needs, and never to train anything.
The features that help shape your words are powered by third-party AI services, and we name them:
- Anthropic (Claude) powers the guided Birth Story conversation, compiling and polishing your words, and answering questions across stories you can read. The relevant entries are sent to Anthropic when you use these features.
- OpenAI (Whisper) turns your voice recordings into text when you capture a memory by voice. The recording is sent for transcription; the words come back and become your entry.
Our agreements with these providers prohibit them from using your content to train their models. Content is processed to produce your result and is not kept by them beyond short-term operational retention under those agreements. Nothing an AI feature produces enters your story until you approve it.
09What we never do
- We never sell or rent personal information, and never have.
- We never show advertising inside the app.
- We never use anything you wrote, your children’s information, or your health information to build or target advertising, ours or anyone else’s.
- We never use your content to train AI models, ours or anyone else’s.
- We never make anything you write public. There is no public surface to put it on.
- We never run facial recognition or biometric analysis on your photos. (Face ID for unlocking the app happens entirely on your device.)
To be clear about what we do: we advertise Maternal Rose itself, so more mothers find the app, and our website may use cookies to measure that advertising (Sections 8 and 10). That marketing is about reaching new families; it never draws on what existing families have written.
11How long we keep things
- Your content is kept for the life of your account, including lapsed accounts, because reading your own story stays free forever (see our Terms).
- When you delete an entry or photo, it is removed from the Service immediately and clears from backups in the normal backup cycle.
- When you delete your account, a 30-day grace period lets you change your mind; after it, everything is permanently deleted, clearing from backups within a further 60 days. We keep one minimal record of the deletion itself (your email address and the date) so a deleted account cannot be quietly recreated, plus transaction records the law requires.
- Analytics and log data are kept only as long as needed for the purposes above and then deleted or de-identified.
12Your rights and choices
Wherever you live, we honor these rights for everyone:
- Access and export. Ask for a copy of your information, including a full export of your words and photos, free. Until self-serve export ships in the app, email us and we will prepare it.
- Correction. Fix anything that is wrong, in the app or by asking us.
- Deletion.Delete entries, photos, a child’s profile, or your entire account, in the app or by asking us.
- Notification choices. Change or silence notifications in the app; unsubscribe from marketing email with one click.
To exercise any right, use the app’s settings or email privacy@maternalrose.com. We verify requests using your account email, respond within 45 days, and never charge for a first request or treat you differently for making one. If we decline a request, we will say why, and you may appeal by replying to our decision; we answer appeals within 45 days.
13US state privacy rights
Privacy laws in California, Virginia, Colorado, Connecticut, Texas, Oregon, and a growing list of states grant rights to access, correct, delete, and port personal information, to limit use of sensitive personal information, and to opt out of sales, sharing, and targeted advertising. We extend all of these rights to every user (Section 12), so exercising them never depends on your address.
For California residents, the CCPA-specific disclosures:
- We collect these categories: identifiers (name, email, phone), account and commercial information (subscription and orders), audio and visual information (your photos and voice recordings), sensitive personal information you choose to provide (health information described in Section 4, faith settings described in Section 5), and internet activity (device and usage data).
- Sources: you, your invited loved ones’ contributions, and your devices. Purposes: those in Section 6. Recipients: those in Section 8.
- We do not sell personal information. If our website uses advertising cookies (Section 10), the measurement signals involved may count as “sharing” for cross-context behavioral advertising under California law; that sharing is limited to website visit signals, never the content of your stories or your sensitive personal information, and you can opt out of it through Global Privacy Control or your browser’s cookie controls.
- We use sensitive personal information (your health information and faith settings) only to provide the Service, so there is no sensitive-use to limit.
- We do not discriminate against anyone for exercising their rights.
Washington and Nevada residents: the rights specific to consumer health data, including deletion and consent withdrawal, are detailed in our Consumer Health Data Privacy Notice.
14Outside the United States
Maternal Rose operates from the United States, and your information is stored and processed there. If you use the Service from another country, you consent to that transfer. For users in regions with comprehensive privacy laws such as the EU and UK: we process your content because you asked us to (performance of our contract), and we process health and faith information only with your explicit consent, given when you choose to write it, and withdrawable by deleting it or your account. You also have the rights in Section 12, including portability, and the right to complain to your local supervisory authority.
15How we protect your data
- Everything is encrypted in transit (TLS) and at rest on Google Cloud infrastructure.
- Passkeys give you phishing-resistant sign-in, and sign-in codes expire after minutes.
- Access to production data is restricted to the people who operate the Service and logged; nobody browses stories.
- Payment card data never touches our servers (Section 2).
No system on the internet can promise perfection. If a breach ever affects your information, we will notify you promptly and plainly, tell you what happened and what we are doing, and never bury it.
16Changes to this notice
When our practices change, this notice changes with them, and the date at the top moves. For material changes we will notify you by email or in the app at least 30 days before they take effect. We will never change the promises in Section 1 and Section 9 retroactively: they apply to everything you have already written, always.
